About NDS Nomads 

Next Gen Developmental Skills

A development and fundamental skills basketball program with a competitive focus. NDS Nomads has programs for boys & girls who not only want to learn the game, but want to enjoy the game.

 

Our program strives to provide fun and safe environment for future basketball players to learn and improve their skills.

 

Our primary goal is to prepare the boys & girls to play basketball at the high school level the

NDS WAY!  

 

Who can play for NDS?
The NDS program is open to 3rd through 8th grade boys & girls local travel program.

When are tryouts?
2024 / 25 season tryouts will be in late July or August of 2024. 

We are planning on having two teams at each grade level.

There is a $20 tryout fee to be paid online at registration or at check-in.

How many players on a team?
Ideally there are 8-10 players per team. With the inclusion of practice players, there may be some situations where a team may have up to 12 players.

How are teams selected?
Teams are selected during the tryouts based upon ability and team need.  Evaluations are conducted during the tryouts by NDS Director, the Asst Director, current coaches, and past coaches. Typically, players are evaluated on dribbling, shooting, defense and overall basketball skills.

Skills and Fundamentals

BALL HANDLING & DRIBBLING

  • Dribbling drills from basic to advanced

  • Set play and fast break dribbling styles

  • Changing direction and speed

  • Spacing from the defender

REBOUNDING

  • Body positioning and boxing out

  • Anticipation and timing

  • Second chance balls

  • When to put it back up, dribble out or outlet pass

PASSING

  • Seeing the court

  • Developing anticipation

  • Understanding passing types and when to use them

  • Bounce, overhead, chest, push, off-dribble and others

  • Movement and communication between players

DEFENSE

  • Understanding one and one and zone defenses

  • Body position, footwork, and spacing

  • Rotating and teammate communication

  • Reading dribbling and closing out

SHOOTING

  • Shooting drills to help muscle memory and consistency

  • Proper positioning techniques for squaring up to the basket

  • Form and balance training, including understanding the importance of grip, the role of back and knees, release, ball rotation

  • Understanding and strengthening skills for different types of shots

  • Jump shots, layups, free throws, using the backboard and more
